Things to do

Whether it’s water-skiing, sightseeing, astrophotography, bushwalking, 4WD, fine dining or enjoying a drink or two there’s plenty to do in our area. Here’s a few things that you should put on your itinerary.

120,000 years in the making. Spanning over more than 50,000 acres Lake Tyrrell is Victoria’s largest salt lake. An ever-changing landscape that evolves with the seasons. Transforming from an expansive hard salt-crusted surface to a perfectly reflective “Sky Mirror” on the shallow watery surface. Immensely popular with photographers and social media users looking to capture its majestic form at sunrise or sunset. Also, becoming quite the go-to attraction for drone and aerial photographers. A must-see when visiting the area.

Large-scale artworks in unlikely places. The Silo Art Trail stretches over more than 200km across through eight towns – Brim, Lascelles, Patchewollock, Rosebery, Rupanyup, Sheep Hills, Sea Lake and Nullawil. Beginning in 2016 the project saw a team of renowned artists from Australia and across the world visit the region, meet the locals and transform each disused grain silo into an epic work of art. A great addition to any itinerary.

Totally secluded and entirely surrounded by big old beautiful gumtrees – Green Lake is a freshwater lake and nature reserve only 10km south of Sea Lake. Sandy beaches, powered camping sites, showers and lots of picnic and barbecue areas it’s fully equipped with everything you would need. The perfect place to take your boat and go water-skiing or fishing as it is fully sheltered from wind. It is worth noting that it has been empty for many years and only has just been refilled with water. It’s off the radar for most people and really is a hidden gem.

Beautiful restored historic country pub – arguably the best pub in the northern regional half of the state. Not many country pubs can boast having a fine dining restaurant, gorgeous balcony level, a beer garden that blends modern and historic features successfully, and excellent main bar with friendly staff, while being open 7 nights a week. But the Royal Hotel can. Even more impressive that it is in a town with a population of less than 700 people. They say seeing is believing – do yourself a favour and go see for yourself.

The Royal Hotel

Over 800,000 acres in area Wyperfeld National Park is Victoria’s third largest national park. For 25 million years Wyperfeld was a shallow inland sea, shaped into its current form by the retreating waters. Today, the park is a fantastic place for 4WDing, camping, bush walking and bird watching. You can also go sandboarding down “Snowdrift” – a big sandhill which resulted from the sandy sediment left behind as the sea retreated. Worth taking a day trip out there.

Restaurants are few and far between in small country towns. And good ones are even rarer. The Juke at the Royal Hotel manages to tick both boxes. Restauranteurs Ezra Tepania and Dylan Walsh offer a fine dining experience that you wouldn’t expect to find in a small town. Open 6 nights a week for lunch and dinner, with brunch available on weekends The Juke offers an excellent range of meals, with fresh local produce and white linen table cloths. Go see what all the fuss is about.

Opened by local artist and farmer Rohan Mott in 2018 the Skymirror Gallery exhibits a diverse blend of works from traditional landscape photography, abstract aerial works and fine art photography. Set within the confines of a converted bank building the Skymirror Gallery was created with the purpose of showcasing the magnificent nearby Lake Tyrrell. All photography features Victoria’s largest salt-lake from various perspectives. Prints available for purchase at the gallery. Worth noting also – the best coffee in town can be found at Skymirror. Even more reason to stop by!
